The Angelina, Sabine, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston
National Forests are in the heavily forested "Piney Woods" of East
Texas. They are comprised of 665,729 acres of federally owned land,
intermingled with private holdings, scattered throughout 12 counties.
National Forests are administered by the US Forest
Service under the multiple use principle with each natural resource
managed under a coordinated, balanced plan. Developed recreational
areas have varying facilities. Designated fee areas require
self-deposit of daily use fees for overnight camping or day use of
developed swimming beaches.
The National Forests that are within easy access
from Garrison and Nacogdoches are:

156,153 acres in Angelina, Jasper, Nacogdoches and

 | Lakeview - On Toledo Bend Reservoir, primitive

 | Ragtown -On Toledo Bend Reservoir about 15
miles southeast of Shelbyville via Texas 87, FM 139 and FSRs 101

Nacogdoches: Old Tyler Road at Loop 224. The
regular season runs from September to May. There is a yearly
Christmas special, summer specials, and plays for children. Acting
workshops are scheduled throughout the year. Anyone interested in

Nacogdoches: Professional touring productions, SFA
art, music and theatre productions. The series starts in the fall
and continues through the spring. All performances are at 7:30 p.m.
in the Turner Auditorium at the Griffith Fine Arts Center on the SFA

Nacogdoches: Serves the East Texas Community and
SFA students with selected SFA faculty presentations, guest artists
and major student art, music and theatre events. For more

Department of Music |
Nacogdoches: More than 75 concerts offered to East
Texas audiences each year. Most of these performances are free to
the public and are presented either in the Turner Auditorium in the
Griffith Fine Arts Building or in the Recital Hall of the Music
building on the SFA campus. Some of the musical programs offered by
the department are the annual performance of Handel's Messiah,
Christmas Madrigal Dinners, a spring opera production, and a band
concert in the park. In addition to its concerts, the department
offers a series of summer camps and workshops for students and

Nacogdoches: The department offers year round
entertainment to both the campus and the East Texas community.
During the school year, the department stages four main stage
productions and numerous student-directed experimental productions.
In the summer, the department offers a season of repertory. The
productions are held in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA

The City Library has general reading and academic
material, periodicals and audio/visual materials, a collection of
large print books, books and old radio shows on tape, and art prints
and pieces of sculpture that may be borrowed. A meeting room with a
large screen video projector is available for groups.
The library offers Dial-a-Story for children. Call
(936) 569-2783 to hear a 10 minute story over the phone. There is
also a pre-school story hour at 10 a.m. every Wednesday. The library
has an inter-library loan program that allows visitors to borrow
books from any other library in Texas. Also, there is a catalog of
films that may be borrowed from the Houston public library.
To get a library card: fill out an application and
have identification and verification of name and address within the
county.
Hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and
Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday;
and, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information,

On Washington Square, built in 1859, it originally
housed the Nacogdoches University, chartered in 1845 by the Republic
of Texas. It was used as a hospital during the Civil War. It has
been used as a university by Masonic Lodge, and as a school run by
Catholic nuns. Currently, the building is furnished with period
pieces, mostly Victorian, some of which were made in Nacogdoches.
The upstairs is set up as an old fashioned school room, with slates
and desks, and other museum exhibits.
It is open from 1 to 4 p.m. daily, except Monday.
It is closed holidays. Admission is free, donations are accepted.

Located on the SFA campus, the Ralph W. Steen
library contains more than 1.5 million volumes. Valid student ID
cards and borrower cards issued by the Steen Library and the
Nacogdoches Public Library may be used to check out materials.
There are audio/visual materials, computer
software and periodicals, mostly for in-house use. The library
contains geological maps and government documents for both the
United States and the State of Texas.
The East Texas Research Center, located on the
second floor, collects materials about East Texas and by East
Texans. It is a regional depository for many official records. It
also contains a large genealogical collection. The Library
Information Network Center (LINC), a large computer facility located
on the first floor, provides access to the library's electronic
databases, general software applications, the campus and internet.
More than 120 computers are available in this facility.
The library's online catalog includes the holdings
of the Nacogdoches Public Library. If the book needed is located at
the public library, it can be delivered to the Steen Library within
24 hours simply by filling out a request form at the circulation
desk. The loan period for most books is three weeks.
Library hours are 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Monday
through Thursday; 7;30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday; and, 2 p.m. to midnight on Sunday. For more information,

 | Nacogdoches: Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library |
Nicholas Adolphus Sterne built the house in 1830.
It is the oldest structure still standing on its original site in
Nacogdoches, TX. Mrs. Eva Catherine Sterne sold the house to Mr.
Joseph Von der Hoya in 1869. Only two families owned the home before
it was gifted to the city in 1958.
The collection includes Hoya objects from the
Victorian Age as well as objects from the Empire period when the
Sternes’ owned the home. A small reference library is also
part of the collection and is still used by visitors looking for
information on local and Texas history, and genealogy.
The house is located on 211 S Lanana St. and is
open Tuesday – Saturday from 8:30–11:30 and 10:00 am –4:00 pm. For

On the SFA campus, The Stone Fort has two exhibits
on display. One is permanent and covers the history of the Y'Barbo
Stone House. The other exhibit changes. For information on what is
currently on display, call (936) 468-2408.
Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday; and, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free, but
donations are appreciated.
